The Jewish Center Celebrates the Start of Passover with a Bonfire

Princeton, NJ, April 12, 2022
– On Friday, April 15, The Jewish Center will get ready to celebrate the beginning of Passover with a new program at 9:00 a.m. led by Rabbi Andrea Merow. This program is titled “Something New At TJC: A Fun Start to Passover” and is scheduled to end by 9:45 a.m.

This program will include a siyum celebrating the completion of a book of study. After this siyum, the first-born children do not have to fast for Passover.

The siyum will be followed by the Sale of Chametz. Chametz is leavened products that are made from wheat, spelt, barley, oats, rye, and any of their derivatives. The torah dictates to not own leavened products throughout Passover and it is traditional for chametz to be sold to somebody who is not Jewish. This year, The Jewish Center will be selling its chametz to Princeton Mayor Mark Freda.

On this day, The Jewish Center congregants will also be encouraged to bring chametz to burn outside on The Jewish Center premises. The Jewish Center will be providing kosher marshmallows for those who participate to roast over the fire.

“We are thrilled to have an event like this led by Rabbi Merow. Passover is such an important holiday. Roasting marshmallows and selling chametz to Mayor Freda adds to the excitement” says Joel Berger, Executive Director of The Jewish Center.

The day before the Sale of Chametz, it is traditional for the Jewish people to search for chametz symbolically in their homes and clean their kitchens in order for it to be kosher for Passover. Kosher for Passover, in addition to traditional kosher rules include the prohibition of leavened products.

Passover celebrates the Jewish people leaving Egypt after being enslaved. Passover is traditionally celebrated with a seder with a series of significant foods, prayer, and religious readings.
